Shadows

John Musser, October 31st, 2005   Comments(1)

ShadowsShadows, the new twist on social bookmarking, offers an API to their service. What’s Shadows? From their site:

Shadows is a social bookmarking service for discovering, sharing and managing information on the web. Shadows supercharges this information with a “Shadow Page” — a community blog for any web page that includes views, ratings, tags, and comments by you, your friends and the Shadows community.

For a quick profile of the service see TechCrunch. The API itself has a fairly simple REST-based design with methods for managing posts and tags. As they note it’s nearly identical to the del.icio.us API. Authentication is HTTP Basic and developers are advised to follow a small set of ‘good citizen’ requirements such as at least one second between queries and identifying yourself via your User-Agent string. See this site’s Shadows Profile for a summary.

One Response to “Shadows”
  1. I took Shadows for a spin and wasn’t overly impressed. The concept is actually quite good but I was amazed at how heavy the whole thing seemed.

Also, navigation leaves a lot to be desired and it was a lot of page clicks to add a lousy tag to a bookmark that I had forgotten to put in originally.

My bet: del.icio.us has nothing to worry about, they are still the fastest, coolest, and easiest social bookmarking site.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

    Best,

    Dion
Best feature of Shadows: A screenshot of the bookmarked page. That actually did seem very useful to me.
